The Porcelain Gallery

The white gold from Thuringia

At the former “big parlour“, directly next to the entrance area , the world of the “white gold” with its characteristic porcelain belonging to the extensive collection of the museum opens up to the visitors. At Volkstedt porcelain has been produced since 1762 and at other manufactories of the former principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt since 1832. Georg Heinrich Macheleid is considered to be the inventor of the porcelain in Thuringia. Luxurious tableware of the court of Rudolstadt, everyday coffee and tea sets, delicate figurines of great rarity and elaborately decorated vessels reflect the artistic particularity of the Thuringian porcelain.

The manufactories of Schwarzburg

Especially sophisticated figurines produced at the Schwarzburgian manufactories founded in 1909 attract great attention, among them models of famous artists such as Ernst Barlach or Gerhard Marcks. Humorous, cheerful or expressive – every single one of these creations contributed to the renewal of the porcelain art at the beginning of the 20th century.
